The Vale Barqueiros Estate, covering some 800 ha, was founded in 1853 and is situated a few kilometres from Alter do Chão in the beautiful northern Alentejo region. It is a large estate owned by the family of Commander Vasco Faria, whose main activities are the cultivation of grapes and olives using irrigation.
It currently comprises 122 ha of vineyards and 368 ha of olive groves, from which only the finest olives are selected to produce the estate’s own wines and olive oils, marketed under the “Vale Barqueiros” brand. The estate also comprises 140 ha of cork oak and stone pine woodland, 2 dams, 3 lakes, a members’ hunting ground and a sport fishing club.
The region surrounding the Vale Barqueiros Estate possesses a rich prehistoric component, evidenced by approximately fifteen identified dolmens. Later, the Romans also left their mark on this location, immortalizing their presence with their exceptional construction skills, exemplified by the Vila Formosa Bridge (a national monument from the 1st century), which has remained intact despite the passage of time and water to this day.
In social terms, the Vale Barqueiros Estate is the largest employer in the municipality of Alter do Chão, thus contributing to the socio-economic development of the region. From the outset, it has focused on implementing cutting-edge technologies in viticulture and olive grove cultivation, pioneering the installation of a drip irrigation system adapted to these crops.
Partnerships were also established with international experts who contributed to the development of the estate’s own know-how, making it a benchmark in technological terms today.
