Grape Varieties and Vineyards

Our Grape Varieties and Vineyards

The vineyards, cultivated under integrated production practices, are spread across a typically undulating landscape and cover an area of 122 ha, encircling the entire estate. Owing to their geographical location, they are influenced by the temperate climate of the north-eastern Alentejo, giving Vale Barqueiros wines a distinctive and unique character.

The estate is clearly dominated by Portuguese grape varieties, which lend it a strong regional character and are perfectly suited to the characteristics of the Alentejo landscape and climate.
Among the typical Portuguese grape varieties, the standout reds are Aragonês, Trincadeira and Touriga Nacional, whilst the standout whites are Arinto, Fernão Pires and Antão Vaz. As a relatively recent addition, the winery has focused on internationally recognised grape varieties that offer greater complexity, such as Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The double-cordon system is the method used to train all the vines in all our vineyards.
